  • That One Time I Was Stuck in an Icy City For 3 Days

My teacher wanted me to write about a time I was in a natural disaster, however I have really not experienced one that much except for one time if you would call this a natural disaster. I have only really been in a couple severe thunderstorms or just near them, and have been in a few tornado watches. Right now as I’m writing this there is a thunderstorm outside right now, nothing like setting the mood I guess. Well what happened is kinda rare here in Texas, but this is what happened.

In the morning I woke up and started my online curriculum (this was not during covid). After two of my lessons the wifi was not working and seconds later my dad came bursting through my room telling me to look outside my windows. I opened the blinds and all the trees, leaves, and everything was covered in a really thick layer of ice. Not snow, ice! This happened during the winter but, what is strange is it rained and everything froze because it was really cold. It usually never rains here and proof of that is that all the rivers here are dried up and oak trees are rapidly dying here. Back to the story, soon the power went out and we had to start a fire and huddle up in the living room next to the fire because of how cold it was. Every now and then you could hear crashing. Soon, I found out this crashing came from falling trees because of the weight of the ice. One tree fell on top of our roof and another tree almost took out my brother’s bedroom window. This kept continuing for 3 days before the power came on in the middle of the night and all the lights turned on and it was miserable to be awake in the middle of the night and have to get up and turn off all the lights. In the morning it started warming up and I was finally able to go outside and see the damage. Roads were blocked and the few homes that were near us almost got damaged because of the falling trees. Eventually my family and I went in the car to see all the damage around the city. Power lines were still out for some people and fallen trees were everywhere. Soon enough it warmed up even more, but trees were still everywhere and in a few days they were mostly cleared out. That’s the one time I have really been in a natural disaster if you would consider it a natural disaster. Stay tuned for the next post.
