Novels, Novellas, Short Stories

There are five types of books; novel, short story, novella, drama, and poem. I am going to talk about three, novel, short story, and novella. First, a novel is the most common type of book. Many, many books are novels. A novel is a long prose narrative that describes fictional characters and events usually in the form of a sequential story. Five examples of novels are…

  • Moby-Dick
  • The Great Gatsby
  • A Tale of Two Cities
  • A Knight of the White Cross
  • The Dragon and the Raven

Next, I will talk about a short story. A short story is not a story that is short. A short story makes use of plot resonance, and other dynamic components to a far greater degree than is typical of an anecdote, yet a far lesser degree than a novel. To make this definition simpler a short story has only one plot line and not many like novels.  Five examples of a short story is…

  •  The Lottery
  • The Metamorphosis
  • The Tell-Tale Heart
  • The Monkey’s Paw
  • A Good Man Is Hard To Find

Last, I am going to talk about a novella. A novella generally features fewer conflicts than a novel, yet more complicated ones than a short story. Novellas is generally longer than a short story, but has a more simplified plot line as compared to a novel. Five examples of novellas are…

  • A Christmas Carol
  • Animal Farm
  • The Little Prince
  • The Turn of the Screw
  • Heart of Darkness

These are only out of the five different types of books.
